Gilderoy hihityttää Griseldaa - Griselda giggles at Gilderoy

Bowtruckle Pines sai uuden asukkaan tänään kun Gilderoy Lockhart teki dramaattisen sisääntulon viitta hulmuten, tuoreeltaan kaukomailta tulleena. "On siinä keikaria kerrakseen", Griselda hekotteli. "Mitä mahtavat kylän muut velhot tuumata koreasta kollista?"

Bowtruckle Pines got a new inhabitant today as Gilderoy Lockhart made a dramatic entrance, cloak swishing , fresh from his journey from a faraway land. "My my, aren't you a dashing lad", Griselda chuckled. "I wonder what the village wizards will make of this dandy sorcerer?"

Gilderoy lampsi Riddle's Rookiin kuin kotiinsa ja istahti isännän elkein Voldemortin tuoliin. Tosin, jos tuo tietäisi, kenelle tuoli kuuluu, saattaisi pojalle tulla pupu pöksyyn.

Gilderoy swept into Riddle's Rook and draped himself elegantly in Voldemort's chair. Although, if he knew who that chair belongs to, he might not be quite so nonchalant.

"Uh oh, now you've really done it", Griselda sniggers. "Just you wait until Voldy here's about this!" Lockhart doesn't notice her malicious glee, he's too busy trying to strike a flattering pose. Poor Gilderoy, I have a feeling he'll be shocked by how hard it is to impress the old hag!

Sisustusta aloittelemassa - Starting interior work

Griselda on sanansa mittainen - kun ei muuten ala tapahtua, on se hakenut Hagridin Pörrön vahvistamaan sanomaansa: vauhtia rakennushommiin!!

Griselda is a woman of her word - when all else has failed, she has indeed borrowed Hagrid's Fluffy to amplify her message: get building!!

Oon jo hyvän aikaa viivytellyt varsinaisissa sisustushommissa  ja kehittänyt aikamoisen kynnyksen niiden alottamisen suhteen. Ideoita kyllä piisaa, vaan ei rohkeutta ryhtyä toteuttamaan niitä kun pelkona on, ettei niistä tuu ollenkaan sitä mitä tavottelen. Täytyy kuitenkin myöntää, että Pörrön kolme kuolavaa ja kumeasti urisevaa kitaa ovat varsin motivoivia...

Joten, ei kun töihin! Ensi töikseni kaivoin kaapista aika päivää sitten matskuksi ostamani bambuverhot ja ryhdyin purkamaan niitä ja leikkelemään niistä lautoja puolipaneloitua seinää varten:

I keep putting off renovating the actual houses, having developed something of a block with them. I have lots of ideas but as always I'm having trouble mounting the courage to actually get to it, fearing that it won't be anything like what I'd want it to be. I have to admit though, that Fluffy's three growling and slobbering maws are very persuasive...

So, I decided to take the plunge! I dug out a set of bamboo blinds that I've bought at the fleamarket for this very purpose. I began taking them apart and cutting boards for a panelled wall:

The string from the blinds will be good for crfts too and the wooden bits from the ends of the strings make very good bottles!

Griselda kehrää - Griselda purrs

Kerrankin (toistaiseksi) Griselda kehrää tyytyväisenä - tein sille kaminan. Öisin on yhä ollut -20 astetta, joten ymmärrän ilon.

For once (and for now) Griselda is purring like a kitten - I made her a stove: The nights have still been -20 degrees Celsius, so I understand her joy.

Näistä korviksista napsautin nuo "nupit". Toisesta tuli kaminan luukun nuppi, toisesta venttiili. Nuo kaksi oikealla näkyvää korunosaa saivat uuden elämän luukun saranoina:

I snapped those "knobs" off these ear rings. One of them ended up as the knob on the stove hatch, the other as a valve. The two bits on the right are now the hinges of the stove's hatch:

Kamina sai siitä hatun. Musta tuntuu että toi hatun pää jengoineen ehkä kaipaa vielä jotain... hmmm... mitä mieltä olette? Putkea siihen ei tule, sillä hormiin liittyvä osio on kaminan selkäpuolella. Joku koriste? Vai jätänkö hatun tuollaiseksi?

I turned it into the stove's hat. I feel the point with the hinges might still need a little something... hmmmm... what do you think? I though of a pipe at first, but ended up putting that at the back of the stove. An ornament of some kind? Or should I just just leave the hat as it is?

Vain Griseldalla on pokkaa vallata Voldemortin tornipiilon makkari ja käskeä Pimeyden Lordi yhä  sisustamattomaan Marvolo Manoriin... "Tees tilaa vanhemmilles poika ja lakkaa mesoamasta sillä taikasauvallasi ennen kuin löydät sen yllättävästä paikasta! ... Vai käärmeitä - onpa hienovaraista! Mutta kyllä tuo peti välttää!"

Only Griselda has the crystal balls to take possession of Voldemort's tower bedroom and send the Dark Lord packing to the still bare Marvolo Manor... "Make room for your elder and quit waving that wand at me son, or you'll soon find it in an unexpected place! ... Snakes huh? A little on the nose, hmmm? But the bed'll do all the same!"

Tapahtuuko tätä teille? - Does this happen to you?

Saatte epämääräisen idean ja ryhdytte kaivelemaan matskuja etsiessänne ideaan sopivia osia ja yhtäkkiä huomaatte, että olette levittäneet matskulootia ympäri kämppää, idean toteutukseen sopivia osasia on toki karttunut vino pino, mutta kuin ihmeen kaupalla onkin kulunut tuntikausia vaikka ette ole edes päässeet operaation askarteluvaiheeseen... ja se saakin jäädä toiseen päivään, sillä nyt onkin jo kiire siivota ylimääräiset pois ja ryhtyä väsäämään illallista... Kuulostaako tutulta?

You get a vague idea for a project, start digging out the goodies in your various stashes to look for suitable parts for it and suddenly realize that you've managed to fill every surface with boxes and while you have found some suitable parts for the project, you also find that somehow several hours have passed and you haven't even gotten to the actual crafting yet... and in fact it'll have to wait, because now you're in a hurry to put away all the stuff and get started on dinner... Does this sound familiar?

Tuntuu, että vähintään puolet mun askartelusessioistani päättyy juuri noin... tällä kertaa ryhdyin etsimään osasia kaminoiden tekoon. Griselda kerkesi jo innostua että pääsee lämmittelemään oman kamiinan ääreen ja oli näemmä puhunut mukaansa myös Kalkaroksen ja nuoren Harryn. Milläköhän Griselda oli Severuksen mukaansa kiristänyt, mies ei näytä kovin innostuneelta...

At least half of my crafting sessions seem to end like that... this time I was searching for bits and bobs for making little stoves or furnaces. Griselda was all excited about getting to huddle by one of her own and had apparently even gotten Snape and young Harry involved. I wonder what Griselda has on Severus, he doesn't look like a willing participant...

Tästä on jo muutama päivä aikaa ja vaikka ne löytämäni osaset tuolla odottelevat kokoamista, ovat muut kiireet ajaneet kaminanrakentelun edelle. Griselda on vimmoissaan ja uhkailee lainaavansa Hagridin kolmepäistä hirviökoira Pörröä saadakseen rakenteluuni vähän vipinää! En yhtään ihmettelisi vaikka toteuttaisi uhkauksensa... Kaiken kukkuraksi Locktite-pikaliimani otti ja loppui. En enää suostu ostamaan pikaliimaa tuubeissa, jostain syystä ne hajoo mulla hyvin nopeasti sillä seurauksella että askarteluni on liiman peitossa ja tiukasti kiinni sormissani... Mutta onpa yllättävän vaikeeta löytää paikkaa, joka myisi tuota tavaraa pulloissa! Netistä toki löytyisi, mutta sitten siihen tulee postikulut päälle.

That was a few days ago and though the bits and pieces I found have been set aside so they are readily available, I've been too busy with other stuff. Griselda is not a happy camper. She's threatening to borrow Hagrid's three-headed beast of a dog Fluffy to get me working at a suitable pace! I wouldn't put it past her... To top it all my Locktite Super Glue ran out. I refuse to buy the stuff they sell in little tubes. For some reason the tubes always fall apart on me at some point, leaving my work drenched in it and firmly glued to my fingers... But it's surprisingly hard to find a place that sells it in bottles! I'd hate to buy it online since that means paying postage on top of everything.

Rookia rukkaamassa - Raising the Rook

Pitihän se arvata. Löysin Griseldan tyhjästä Marvolo Manorista yllyttämästä taikayhteisöä kapinaan - palopuhe oli niin kiihkeä, että Ginnyllä nousi hiukset pystyyn! Ei auttaneet mun selittelyni 1:1 kiireistä, nyt vaadittiin vähän miniäksöniä!

I should've known. I found Griselda in the vacant Marvolo Manor inciting the magical community to an insurrection - her rhetoric was so fiery, it set Ginny's hair on end! My feeble explanations of a busy 1:1 life fell on deaf ears. Mini action was demanded!

Koska Voldemort on harvinaisen suostuttelukykyinen ("Kidutu!") päätin alottaa Riddle's Rookista. Se on projekteista pieninkin, joten kynnys siihen on matalin. Ja voi elämä mikä tohelo olen, ollappa pöytäsaha! Kesti nimittäin ainakin pari tuntia sahata sopivankokoiset palat Rookin kolmannen kerroksen seiniä ja kattoja varten... pikkuruinen käsisahani veti alvariinsa vinoon ja lopulta alotin alusta tavallisella käsisahalla. Joka tapauksessa, nyt on osat vihdoin sahattu.

Since Voldemort is particularly persuasive ("Crucio!") I decided to start with Riddle's Rook. It's the smallest of the current projects too, so easiest to brave. But lord what a klutz I am! I wish I had a table saw! It took at least a couple of hours for me to saw pieces for the Rook's third floor's walls and roof... my tiny handsaw kept veering off so I couldn't get a straight line and finally I ended up starting over using a regular handsaw. At any rate, now the walls and roof are ready for installation.

Onnettoman sahaussession jälkeen en luottanut taitoihini koota kolmatta kerrosta, joten siirryin suunnittelemaan Rookin takkaa, josta tulee iso, jotta sen kautta voi matkustaa hormiverkostossa. Suhersin takan pääpirteet ruutupaperille ja sitten hiilipaperin avulla pahville, sillä halusin ensin tehdä takasta pahvisen version, jota mallata paikoilleen helppoa hienosäätöä varten.

After the pathetic start I didn't trust myself to put together the third floor and started in on the Rook's main fireplace instead. It needs to be really big to allow for travel through the Floo Network. I sketched out the basic dimensions on grid paper and then transferred it to cardboard using carbon paper. This because I wanted to make a rough cardboard template of the fireplace before making the final version, so I could try fitting it into the Rook and make alterations as needed.

Tässä pahviversio takalle osotetulla paikalla. Voldemort hoputteli kylmästi lopettamaan viivyttelyn ja ryhtymään tositoimiin.

Meni silti vielä hyvä tovi kun pähkäilin mitä materiaalia käyttäisin. Pahvi tuntui liian heppoiselta, saha repi vanerin rumasti ja osa vanerista oli vääntynyt. Lopulta otin vanhan kehyksen taustan, mitä lie lastulevytavaraa, jotain vanerin ja tosi jäykän pahvin väliltä, ja siirsin taas takan ääriviivat siihen hiilipaperin avulla.

It took a while for me to decide on the material for the fireplace though. Cardboard felt too flimsy, my saw tore up the plywood and some of it was warped to begin with. Finally I grabbed the back of an old frame, some kind of woodlike stuff somewhere between plywood and stiff, thick cardboard. Out came the carbon paper again as I used it to trace the silhouette of the fireplace onto the "wood".

Tässä tulos. Parasta olis ollut keskittää toi kuva niin, ettei sen kohdalle olis osunut noita reikiä, mutta lykkäsin sen levyn laitaan koska saha ei toiminut tuon matskun kanssa ja askarteluveitsellä kesti ikuisuuksia kaivertaa takka irti levystä ja näin säästin vähän vaivaa. Minäkö laiska ;)

Here's the result. The best thing would've been to center the scetch to avoid those holes, but my saw was not good for this material and it took forever to carve it out with an X-acto knife and this way I saved some time and bother. Lazy? Who, me? ;)

Griselda ikkunaostoksilla & minä ja muut Kätkijät - Griselda window shopping & me and other Borrowers

Griselda se jaksaa vihjailla, miten rankkaa on kodittomalla vanhuksella ja kuinka kylmä onkaan talvi kun ei ole kattoa pään päällä ja vanhan luita kolottaa eikä ole paikkaa mihin luutaansa nojata. Tarkasti ottaen Griselda kyllä on vallannut tyhjillään remonttia odottavan Marvolo Manorin, mutta toki ymmärrän, että omaa tekisi mieli. Tädillä vaan on kovin suuret odotukset. Eilen oli pakko päästää akka koneelle talokuvia katselemaan. Ajatukseni oli etsiä sieltä ideoita mökkiin, jonka rakennan itse, mutta eikö tuo heti iskeny silmänsä Greenleafin Orchid-nimiseen mökkiin. Ja onhan se hirmuisen sievä!

Griselda is tirelessly harping on about how tough it is to be elderly and homeless, how her poor old bones ache when she has no roof overhead and nowhere to lay her broom. Strictly speaking she's not at the mercy of the elements, as she's squatting in the still empty and unrenovated Marvolo Manor. But I see her point, she does need something more permanent. The trouble is, she's got grand expectations. Yesterday I had to let her go online to look at houses, with the idea (at least on my part) of looking for ideas for a cottage I could build her myself. Griselda however fell for Greenleaf's Orchid. And sure enough, it is adorable!

Mutta kuten Griseldalle sanoin, ei mulla ole varaa mihinkään lähemmäs 70 euron arvoiseen huusholliin! Griselda ei vaikuttanut vakuuttuneelta... Lopulta jouduin ilmottamaan aika tiukin sanakääntein, että täti on hyvä ja tyytyy johonkin mun vaatimattomaan tekeleeseen! Jos mä joskus rikastun (joopa joo...), voidaan asiasta neuvotella uudemman kerran. Tulos on, että siinä missä sen papatukselta ei eilen saanut rauhaa, on tämä päivä ollut suorastaan jäätävän hiljainen. Griselda on mököttänyt merkitsevästi Marvolo Manorin ikkunassa aamusta iltaan - ei pihahdustakaan, mutta sen katse porautuu ytimiin. Luulisi ton ikäisen täti-ihmisen tietävän, että elämä on. Ja taatusti en kerro sille, että mäkin haaveilen, että ehkä jonakin päivänä... se ei vaan kertakaikkiaan ole kovin realistinen haave. Huoh.

But as I told Griselda, a 70 euro cottage just isn't within our means! She was not convinced... Finally I had to tell her in no uncertain terms that she better just get used to the idea that I will make her a far more modest cottage myself! If I get rich one day (as if...), we can revisit the issue. The result is, that whereas you couldn't shut her up yesterday, today her silence has been downright chilling. Griselda has spent the entire day in the window of Marvolo Manor, pointedly silent, but I can feel her disapproving glare boring into me. You'd think that at her age, she'd have learned that you can't always get what you want. And I will never let on that I too hope that perhaps, one day... it's just not a very realistic dream. Sigh.

Olen mä kylläkin ostanu kaks uutta nukekotia... kyllä, luitte oikein... Mutku nähkääs halvalla sai! Olivat 5 euroa kipale ja loppupelissä myyjä antoikin ne ihan ilmaseks! Oi onnea! Toinen taloista on metrin korkuinen ja sen annan äidille synttärilahjaksi. Mähän olin jo tehnyt kaavat Muumitaloa varten (äiti on sellaisesta haaveillut), mutta loppupelissä teenkin Muumitalon tosta aihiosta. Pyöreähän se ei ole, mutta muuten täydellinen :)

I have bought two other dollhouses though... yes, you heard me... But I had to! They only cost 5 euros each and then the seller decided to just give them to me for free! Oh joy! One of the houses is 1 meter in height and I will give that to mom. She's been dreaming of a Moomin House and I'd already made cardboard templates for it, but this will actually make a fine Moomin House. It's not round of course, but otherwise a great start :)

Toinen uusi hankintani on  reissussa rähjääntynyt Lundby, josta puolestaan tulee uusi Dobby Downs. Ehkä pykään siitä toisesta Griseldalle mökin, saas kattoo. Itselläni oli aikoinaan samanmallinen Lundby (aikaisempaa vuosikertaa kylläkin, se kun oli 70-lukua), joka harmi kyllä on hävinnyt vuosien saatossa.

My other new acquisition is an old and rather battered Lundby, which I'll probably make into a new Dobby Downs. Maybe I'll turn the one I first got for that purpose into a cottage for Griselda. We'll see. Anyway, I had a Lundby like this as a kid (although an earlier model, since this was in the '70s), that unfortunately has been lost to the ages.

Lapsuusmuistoista puheenollen, muistatteko Mary Nortonin kirjat Kätkijöistä? Luin ne ihastuneena ties kuinka monta kertaa. Niistä tehtiin sittemmin ensin brittisarja (jonka ekan tuotantoauden löysin dvd:na pari vuotta sitten) ja sitten leffa. Jos ette, niin tässä muistinvirkistystä:

Kätkijät kiehtoivat mua muksuna suunnattomasti ja mä tykkäsinkin hiipparoida ympäri kämppää katselemassa pieniä esineitä kätkijän näkökulmasta, vieden ne sitten nukkekotiini, jonne pykäsin kätkijöiden pesän. Mielikuvitusta kutkutti nähdä esineet uudesta näkökulmasta ja sijottaa ne uuteen rooliin. Pitkälti tein siis samaa, mitä nykyään teen kirppareilla :)

Speaking of childhood memories, do you remember Mary Norton's books about The Borrowers?  I loved them and read them over and over again. Later they were made into a British TV show (I found the first season on dvd a couple of years ago) and later still into a movie. If you don't remember them, here's a refresher:

I was fascinated by the Borrowers and I enjoyed walking around the house looking at small objects through Borrower eyes and taking them to my dollhouse, where I built a sort of Borrower's den. I really enjoyed the imaginitive exercise of looking at objects from a new perspective and then giving them a new function. Much the same as what I do at fleamarkets these days :)

Takaraivossa onkin kolkutellut ajatus tehdä myös kätkijä-aiheinen nukkisprojekti. Siihen ei kyllä käy nukkekoti ja toissapäivänä tuli mieleen, että voisiko sen tehdä seinäkelloon. Tuumasta toimeen, kaivoin kätköistäni aiemmin saamani käkikellon, mutta kyllä se on liian pieni sellaseen. Ehkä jos joskus löytyisi joku vähän isompi vanhan ajan seinäkello joka ei enää toimi, sellaseen voisi kätkijänpesän kyhätä :) Juu juu, tiedetään, kun nyt joku jo keskeneräsistä projekteista edistyisi :D Mutta hitto soikoon, kyllä tuokin on vielä toteutettava!

I've long been thinking that it would be fun to do a Borrower project. That means something other than an actual dollhouse and with that in mind I dug out a cuckoo clock that I'd been given a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it's too small for what I have in mind, but should I at some point happen upon a larger clock that doesn't work anymore, that could make a neat den :) Yeah yeah, I know, I have tons of projects already :D But darn it, I have to do a Borrower's den at some point as well!

Kuinka äkäpussi kesytetään - The taming of the shrew

Kuten olen ikuisuuksia selitellyt, kiirettä on pitänyt ja taikamineilyt ovat olleet telakalla. Griseldan muutettua naapurustoon minimaailma on kutsunut entistäkin voimallisemmin, sillä noita pitää huolen siitä, ettei  asia pääse unohtumaan hetkeksikään. Yritä siinä tehdä hommia koneella, kun akka keikkuu näytön päällä kummastelemassa miten tommonen aakkossotku voi olla tärkeämpää kuin rästissä olevat rempat.

As I've been saying ad nauseam, I've been very busy and my magical minimania has had to take the backseat for a spell (no pun intended). The call of the small has been even more difficult to ignore since Griselda moved to the neighborhood. The witch makes certain of that. It's very hard to try to concentrate on working at the computer, when the hag balances of top of the screen loudly marvelling over how such alphabet soup could possibly be more important than all the building that needs to be done.

She was understandably most enthused by the windows, particularly after I told her I'd ordered them expressly for her future cottage. That set off feverish planning and measuring, which allowed me to quietly slip back to the computer.

Aivan ensimmäiseksi tahdon esitellä uuden ystäväni, noita-akka Griseldan! Tapasin Griseldan äidin luona muuttohommissa ollessani ja kun täti kuuli, että mun luonani on orastava taikayhteisö, päätti hän raahata kapsäkkinsä - mukaanlukien tuon kauniin pitsin - Pottereiden kulmille. Griselda on vanhaa kansaa, joka haikeudella muistelee männä vuosikymmenten velhokyliä ja ilahtui suunnattomasti kuullessaan, että täkäläisistä metsistäkin löytyy sellainen. Tosin hää rupesi heti supattelemaan tarvitsevansa oman mökin...

First of all let me introduce my new friend, the witch Griselda! I met her at mom's place and when Griselda heard that there is a burgeoning magical community at my place, she promptly decided to pack her bags - including this beautiful lace - and move to the Potter's neighborhood. She wistfully remembers the vibrant all-magical communities of yesteryear and was thrilled to learn there is a local village just like them in these woods. She is now hinting heavily that she will be needing a cottage of her own...

Luoja kuitenkin yksin tietää milloin Griselda mökkinsä saa - koko velhoyhteisöni odottelee malttamatomana että multa liikenisi aikaa remontoida heidän kotejaan. Lienevät kyllästyneitä kuulemaan erinäisiä ideoitani ja esittelemiäni materiaaleja, kun kaikki tuntuu jäävän haaveiden ja suunnitelmien tasolle. Voldemort uhkailee jo kirouksilla, jollen kohta ala pohjamaalaamaan Marvolo Manoria ja vaatimaton herra kun on, hää on tilannu julkisivuun mustaa marmoria (en oo uskaltanut kertoa, että peikot lakkoilevat louhoksella). Riddle's Rookin tulisijakin on rakentamatta... Hermione pohtii jo viitsisikö pyytää kotitonttuja tapetointihommiin jos en ryhdy tositoimiin ja Ginny muistaa huomautella kuivakkaasti, että Potter's Peakin makkarin piirrustukset ovat olleet valmiina jo  yli vuoden... Tallikin on alkutekijöissään ja Ginevra Cottageen en uskalla vilkaistakaan, ettei Molly tule silmille. Kotitontut sentään vakuuttelevat, että remppaamaton mökkikin on hyvänen aika sentään aivan liikaa!

Lord only knows when Griselda will get her cottage though - the entire wizarding community is on pins and needles, waiting for me to find the time to fix up their new residences. I think they're pretty tired of my lofty ideas and enthusiastic displays of materials, when everything seems to just be pie in the sky dreams and plans. Voldemort is threatening horrific curses unless I start priming Marvolo Manor and being his immodest self has already ordered black marble for the facade (I haven't had the nerve to tell him that the trolls are striking at the quarry). The fireplace of Riddle's Rook hasn't been built yet either... Hermione is debating whether to ask house elves for help if I don't start wallpapering soon and Ginny keeps dryly pointing out that I've had the plans for the Potter's Peak master bedroom ready for over a year... The stables are unfinished and I don't dare even glance at Ginevra Cottage, lest Molly pounce on me. The house elves at least assure me, that even an unrefurbished cottage is much too grand for them!

Syystä nuo mutisevat, itsekin haluaisin toteuttaa visioitamme, mutta aika on kortilla. Jelpin äitiä, paahdan käännöstöitä ja koirat, mukaan lukien vielä kotona asustavat 11-viikkoiset pupeloiset Lablab ja Labua, tarvitsevat minua <3 Mukavaa mutta kiireistä, eikä siinä välissä jaksa eväänsä liikauttaa. Lupaan kuitenkin pyhästi niin taikayhteisölle kuin lukijoille, että jahka surimmat 1:1 työt on hoidettu, edistyvät velhojenkin asumukset!

They have good reason to grumble and I long to realize our visions, but time is scarce. I help mom, work furiously on translations and the dogs, including the 11 week old pups Lablab and Labua who are still here, need me <3 It's nice but keeps me very busy and in between I'm absolutely exhausted. I do promise both the wizarding community and my readers, that once the biggest 1:1 tasks have been completed, I will get back to the wizard dwellings!
