Leikitellen - Playing around

Viime aikoina oon tehnyt lähinnä pikkujuttuja, mm. varmaan lähemmäs parisataa kirjaa ja yhtä monta taikasauvaa. Niistä ei ole kunnon kuvia vielä, sillä ne kaipaavat viimeistelyä. Haluaisin kullekin taikasauvalle kunnon rasian, mutta niiden tekeminen on yllättävän haasteellista. Jos jollain on hyviä vinkkejä, kertokaa ihmeessä. Jotenkin mun tekeleeni on aina vinoja ja erikokosia ja erityisen vaikeaa on ollu tehdä kansia, joten kaikki ideat ovat tervetulleita! Tässä muutama kömpelö yritys - laatikot pahvia, sauvat hammastikkuja, joita oon työstänyt viiloilla, värjännyt ja joihinkin kiinnittänyt rautalankaa koristeeksi:

Lately I've been making tiny stuff like close to two hundred books and as many magic wands. No proper pics yet as they need some finishing touches. I'd like to make a box for each wand but that has proved surprisingly difficult. If anyone has tips on how to make the boxes, please let me know. Somehow mine end up lopsided and are all different sizes and especially making lids that fit is a bit of a nightmare, so all ideas are welcomed! Here are a few clumsy attempts - the boxes are cardboard of course, the wands tooth picks that I've filed to various shapes, colored and some have been adorned with wire:

Pääosin oon kuitenkin leikitellyt Inka Gold-väreillä, testannut miten ne käyttäytyy eri pinnoilla. Tässä oon hieronut niitä nahkaan ja tekonahkaan:

Mostly I've been playing around with the Inka Gold colors, testing them on different surfaces. Here on leather and faux leather:

Tässä oon kokeillut värejä puupinnoilla - stiat oli käsittelemätöntä puuta, muut lakattua/petsattua puuta ja pistin Inka Goldit suoraan lakatulle pinnalle:

Here I've tried them on wood - the dishes were untreated wood, the rest were stained wood and I just put the Inka Gold on top of the lacquer:

Seuraavana oli vuorossa käsittelemätön terrakotta (ylemmästä ei oo kuvia valmiina). Nuo "takat" oli samaa matskua, joihin hieroin Inka Goldin eri sävyjä - näitä värejä on ihana käyttää koska ne ei haise, ne tuntuu kivalta sormissa ja niissä on hyvä peittävyys ja kiilto ja silti kädet ja muut välineet on helppo puhdistaa:

Next I tried the colors on untreated terracotta (no pics of the first pic's plaque in a finished state). The "fireplaces" were the same material and I just rubbed on various shades of Inka Gold. The product is a joy to use because it doesn't smell, it feels great in your fingers, has good coverage and shine yet washes of easily:

Lasitettua keramiikkaa - väri tarttui yllättävän hyvin, tässä lasitettu pinta oli kyllä aika karkea, ehkä se vaikutti asiaan:

Glazed ceramic - the surface took the color surprisingly well but in this piece the glazed surface was fairly rough, which might have helped:

Tässä kokeilin värejä muoviseen aurinkoon - selkeästi väri tarttui siihen verrattain huonosti, mutta tarttui kuitenkin, enkä tähän halunutkaan kauheen yhtenäistä pintaa. Tiedän että on olemassa Inka Gold pohjavärejä ei-huokoisiin pintoihin, mutten ole nähnyt niitä myytävän Suomessa. Puuesineisiin väri tarttui tosi hyvin ja ilokseni ja yllätyksekseni se toimi melko hyvin myös metallipinnoilla. Pitsiin ja kangasnauhoihin väri tarttui ok, taidan tosin kokeilla niitä uusiksi Inka Gldilla, johon oon sekottanu vähän vettä, uskoisin sen toimivan paremmin niin:

Here I tried the colors on a plastic sun - the color didn't take that well to the plastic, which was okay as I didn't really want a very uniform color here. And it did take after a fashion. I know there are Inka Gold primers that can be used on non-porous surfaces, but I've never seen them sold in Finland. The colors work well on wood and to my joy and surprise they worked reasonably well on metal too. They were okay on lace and ribbons but I think I will do a new test with those by mixing the colors with water, I think that might work better:

Sain taas pari uutta Inka Gold-sävyäkin, eli nuo kaksi keskimmäistä purnukkaa ovat värit magenta ja jade. Vertailuksi taas vasemmalta oikealle ruusukvartsi, magenta ja violetti sekä keltavihreä, jade ja smaragdi:

I got a couple of new Inka Gold shades, the two containers in the middle, which are magenta and jade. So again, to show you the differences, from left to right we have rose quartz, magenta and violet and then yellow green, jade and emerald:

Tässä pieni varoituksen sana - näettekö tuon valkoisen kokkareen purkin keskellä? Se on hometta. Koska nää värit on lisäainettomia luonnontuotteita, ne on haavottuvaisia tässä suhteessa. Tämä purnukka on ollu mulla pisimpään, noin vuoden. Homeen voi vain pyyhkäistä pois ja sit käyttää tuotetta normaalisti, mutta huhu kertoo, että jos purnukkaan lisää pari tippaa tislattua vettä ja spriitä, se vähän helpottaisi pitämään tuotteen homeettomana. Vielä en oo kerennyt testamaan tuota vinkkiä, mutta täytyy koklata. Mä vaan tein työtä käskettyä ja pyyhkäsin homeen pois ja tuote toimii hyvin edelleen ja tuoksuu normaalille, joskin kun tässä taannoin taas purkkiin vilkaisin, siellä oli lisää hometta -poistiin senkin ja uudemmissa purnukoissa ei hometta vielä näy, mutta pidän niitäkin silmällä, koska isot tytöt on kertoneet, että jos home saa kunnon jalansijan eikä sitä pyyhitä pois tasasin väliajoin, tuote voi ruveta haisemaan - se toimii siltikin, mutta mielummin siinä pitää ton luonnollisen tuoksun! Mutta siis, ei tarvii hätääntyä ja heittää purnukkaa pois jos tähän törmää.

Homeen ennaltaehkäsemiseksi voi varmistaa, ettei ota väriä sormin suoraan purkista, jolloin niistä voi kulkeutua epäpuhtauksia purkkiin. Mä tosin mielummin otan silti värin sormin sen sijaan, että palettiveitsellä nappaan sitä esim. paletille, koska värit kuivuu tosi nopeesti ja se pikkukokkare sitä nopeammin, tosin jos työskentelee sukkelaan ja käyttää vettä, se ei haittaa. Mä tykkään ottaa värin sormin purkista kohteeseen siksikin, että se vaan tuntuu kivalta :D Mutta tosiaan, se voi lisätä homeen riskiä. Samoin jos lisää vettä suoraan purkkiin, kannattaa käyttää tislattua vettä, koska hanavesi voi jälleen edesauttaa homeen muodostumista.

A word of warning - see that small white blob in the container below? That's mold. Since these colors are a natural product with no additives, they are vulnerable in this respect. I've had this one the longest, about a year. You can just wipe the mold off and then use the product normally, but I'm told that if you add a couple of drops of distilled water and rubbing alcohol, it will help combat the mold. I haven't had time to try that but I will. I just did as instructed and wiped the mold off and the product works as usual and smells the same too, although when I looked into the jar a week or two later, there was a little mold there again. I wiped that off too and the other jars haven't had mold yet at least but I'm checking them regularly as more experienced crafters have told me that if the (possible) mold isn't wiped off regularly it can take hold and make the product smell. You can still use it even if it does smell, but it's nicer when it has its regular fresh smell! But the point is, you need not panic and throw the stuff away if you do encounter mold some time.

You can try to prevent mold by not using the wax by picking it up right out of the jar with your fingers - this can lead to impurities in the product and thus mold. I have to confess though that I prefer to use my fingers to apply the stuff straight out of the jar rather than taking some with a palette knife and depositing it on a palette, because the product dries quickly and the small dollop all the quicker. Although, if you work really quickly or use water, it's not that big a deal. I just like the tactile aspect of taking it out of the jar with my finger :D But as I say, it can increase the risk of mold. Also, if you add water directly to the jar, use distilled water, as tap water can again encourage mold to grow in the jar.

Toinen tavallinen ongelma näiden kanssa on kuivuminen, purkissakin (sulje aina kansi huolellisesti!). Jos väri alkaa kuivua, ei hätää, se on helppo palauttaa entiseen loistoonsa :) Yksi keino on laittaa purnukkaan semmonen vauvojen kosteuspyyhe, kansi päälle ja purkki muhimaan vuorokaudeksi tai pidempään jos on tarvis. Toimii, olen kokeillu :) Tärkeetä on kuitenkin käyttää kosteuspyyhettä, jossa ei ole lisättyjä hajusteita tai voiteita. Jos Inka Goldit kuivuu ihan kivikoviksi koppuroiksi, saattaa veden tai glyseriinin lisääminen auttaa (tee reikiä Inka Gold-väriin, laita sekaan vettä vaikkapa suihkepullosta tai glyseriiniä ja anna muhia suljetussa purkissa vuorokauden, sitten voit yrittä sekottaa ja jos siltä tuntuu, laittaa lisää vettä/glyceriiniä ja taas pistää se muhimaan vuorokaudeksi, jne.) ja jos ei auta, värejä voi kuitenkin yhä käyttää kuten vesivärejä :)

Another fairly common problem with these colors is that they can dry up even in the container (make sure you always close it tightly!). If the wax starts drying, no sweat, it is easily revived to its former glory :) One way is to put a wet wipe in the jar, put the lid on tightly and set the jar aside for 24 hours or longer if needed. It works, I've tried it :) It is however important to use a wet wipe without added fragrance or lotion. If your Inka Gold dries so it's really hard, adding water or glycerin can help (poke holes in the wax, spritz in water or glycerin, put the lid on and let it stand for 24 hours, then open it up, try to mix it to original consistency and if it isn't soft enough, add more water/glycerin and give it another 24 hours, and so on) and if not, you can still use the completely hardened blobs like you would water colors :)

Mä lupaan, mä OLEN askarrellutkin, oikeesti!! :D Ne vaan ei ole valmiita näytille vielä. Sillä välin teki mieli esitellä teille näitä ihania värejä - mainittakoon, että hehkutuksesta huolimatta tämä ei ole mainos :D Harvoin ostan mitään tiettyä tuotetta ja vielä harvemmin hurahdan totaalisesti johonkin, mutta tässä se kuuluisa poikkeus joka vahvistaa säännön - Viva Decorin Inka-Gold värit <3

Tuote on saksalainen, mutta itse törmäsin siihen ensi kertaa vuosi sitten Jenkeissä askartelutavaratalo Michaelsissa. Sittemmin oon  hiljalleen ostanu/saannu lisää värejä, nyt viimeksi sain muutaman aikasena joululahjana.

Värejä taitaa kaikkiaan olla olemassa joku kolmisenkymmentä, mulla on nämä 16 ihanuutta! Koska netistä etsiessä oli vaikea löytää todenmukasia Inka-Gold värikarttoja, päätin yrittää kantaa korteni kekoon postaamalla nämä :)

I promise, I HAVE done crafts too, honestly!! :D I'm just not ready to show you yet. In the meantime I felt like showing you these glorious colors - I should add that despite the gushing, this is not an ad :D I very rarely buy a particular product and even more rarely do I fall completely in love with one, but this is the exception to the rule - Viva Decor's Inka-Gold colors <3

It's a German product but I first stumbled over it a year ago at Michael's in the USA. I've since bought or been given a few more and just got a few colors as an early Christmas present.

I think there are about 30 or so colors available in all, but I just have these 16, my treasures! I've found it very hard to find accurate color examples online so I thought I'd try to help out with this post :)

Värit on myrkyttömiä ja mehiläisvahapohjasia ja todella riittoisia, pienikin määrä peittää hyvin isommankin alueen. Värejä voi sekottaa, niitä voi käyttää sellasenaan kohteeseen hieroen ja sitten kiillottaen (lakkaa ei välttämättä tarvita, riippuu hieman käyttökohteesta) tai veden kanssa kuten vesivärejä. Ne kuivuu nopeesti eikä tahraa kuivuttaan. Koska värit on vesiliukosia käsien, pensseleiden ja alustojen puhdistaminen on helppoa. Ja ennen kaikkea, värien ihana kiilto on upea! Joo, kuten huomaatte, oon aivan rakastunu näihin!

You can find more on the Inka-Golds on Viva Decor's website. In Finland I've ordered them from Heidin korttipaja, excellent service :) There are tons of fabulous Inka-Gold tutorials on youtube!

The colors are non-toxic and bees wax based and a little goes a long way as it has great coverage. You can mix the colors, rub them on your project as they are and then buff to a shine (most of the time you need no sealant, depending on the use of the item of course) or dilute them with water like you would use watercolors. They dry fast and once dry they don't stain. Clean-up is easy as all you need is water. And above all, the colors and the shine are wonderful! Yeah, as you can see I'm totally in love with these!

As seen in the previous post I also have the Metallic Rub Ons, but they can't hold a candle to the Inka-Golds!

Kesä on hujahtanut lähinnä koiranpentujen ja hoitomuksujen parissa, enkä oo juurikaan askarrellut muuta kuin lisää kirjoja. Nyt kuitenkin iski inspis pitkästä aikaa, tuloksena uusi takka. Se syntyi näistä osasista:

Yritin muistaa ottaa kuvia prosessista, mutta loppupelissä se oli aika turhaa, koska rakentaminen oli niin sellasta pienistä hukkapaloista kokoamista, ettei kuvista varsinaisesti ole minkäänlaista hyötyä, varsinkin kun unohdin koko kameran puolivälissä projektia :D

Kirjoja oon väkerrellyt edelleen, 90 kipaletta koossa. Nyt täytyy tehä lisää pieniä kirjoja, kun oon nyt tehny suurimmaks osaks semmosia kookkaita tai ainakin paksuja loitsukirjoja.

Still working on books, up to 90 now. I have to start making more small books, since I've made a lot of bigger or at least thicker tomes like spellbooks.

Mä en oo tehny kirjoja aiemmin ja ajattelin jakaa oman tekniikkani ja kysellä miten itse teette omanne?

I've never made books before and thought I'd show you my technique and ask you about yours?

Oon ostellu kirppareilta tällasia muutaman sentin maksavia kirjoja materiaaliksi. Vähän pyhäinhäväistykseltähän se kirjafanista tuntuu pilkkoa niitä, mut oon yrittäny valita huona kirjallisuutta tähän ;D Kannet leikkaan irti, hyvää askartelumateriaalia nekin.

I've bought books like these, that cost a few cents per book, at flea markets. For a book buff like me it does feel a bit sacrilegious to cut them up, but I've tried to pick bad out literature ;D I cut off the covers, which make good mini material as well.

Then I cut the book into sections of varying thickness:

Seuraavaksi leikkaan kirjan kuten alla. Mä käytän vaan ton osan, jossa on kirjan selkämys, jos kohta oon aatellu käyttää osan irtosivuista kääröihin. Mä käytän esim. viivotinta tai suoria, sopivan levyisiä puutikkuja ja järeää mattoveistä.

Next I cut the book as in the pic below. I only use the part closest to the back of the book, although I'll use some of the loose pages left over for scrolls. I use a ruler or other straight edged objects of the breadth I want and cut along them with a sturdy knife.

Sit pätkin tuon mötikän kirjoiksi jiirisaksien avulla. Tietääkö joku saisko noihin jostain uusia teriä vai tarviiko tässä ruveta metsästämään uusia jiirisaksia nyt kun nuo alkaa tylsistyä?

I use the tool below (no idea what it's called in English... also, does anyone know if one can buy new blades for it?) to cut the long piece into individual books.

Leikkaan kannet suht ohkasesta pahvista ja liimaan niihin kangasta tms. kansiksi.

I use pretty thin card for the book covers, gluing fabric or whatever onto them.

Jos haluan värjätä sivut, lillutan kirjat vahvassa teessä pari minsaa ja laitan ne sit kuivumaan. Kun kirjat on kuivuneet, saatan kullata sivujen reunat tussilla. Sit liimaan kirjoihin kannet, minkä jälkeen ne voikin koristella mielensä mukaan.

If I want to color the pages, I soak the books in strong tea for a couple of minutes and then dry them over night. Sometimes I gild the edges of the pages with gold marker and then I glue the covers on and after that I can start embellishing them.

Kirjallisuutta kehiin! - Start the presses!

Taikayhteisö janoaa luettavaa, joten mut pistettiin näpräämään kirjoja. Lisää on tulossa mut ekat 40 nidettä on nyt valmiit, vielä pitää koristella kannet jahka siihen löytyy aikaa :)

The magical community is clamoring for books, so I was put to work. More is needed but the first 40 tomes are ready, except for the cover art, which will have to wait until I have time to do some more mini work :)

Takaisin mineilyn pariin - Back to the mini crafts

Tauon jälkeen oli eilen vähän aikaa näpräilyynkin :) Pikkupiiperrystä tällä hetkellä, sillä mulla ei oikein oo tilaa levittää isompaa projektia mihinkään just nyt.

Muovisista hammastikuista ja helmistä tein mielestäni tosi kauniit kynttilänjalat  ja karttaneuloista ja helmistä pullot, jotka on vielä koristelematta:

After the brief hiatus I got back to actually making stuff yesterday :) Small bits and pieces at the moment, since I don't really have anywhere to work on the big stuff just now.

I used beads and plastic toothpicks to make really nice candelabras and push pins and beads to make bottles that I've yet to decorate:

Koristelin helmihattuja ja pieniä kruunuja "jalokivin", toiseen kruunuun väkersin tommosen samettihupun:

I embellished bead caps and tiny crowns with rhinstones and made one of those velvet caps for one of the crowns:

I used tiny shells and bits of rubber strig to make slugs and embellished them too a teeny bit:

Tämä lihansyöjäkasvi on ollu mielessä pidemmän aikaa. Söin joskus litsi-nimisiä hedelmiä, joiden kuoret oli niin hauskat että kuivatin ne ja ihan selvät kidat niistä tuli. Niinpä leikkasin ja liimasin niille hammasrivistöt ja ahnaan kielen nahasta, muotoilin muovikukan pikkuseen ruukkuun ja tällanen vaarallisen näkönen kaveri se tuli - poseeratkoon nyt Riddle's Rookissa kunnes saa lopullisen sijotuspaikkansa:

I've been meaning to make this carnivorous plant for some time. A good while ago we had litchi fruit and their skins are so fun I dried them for future use. And they dried into obviously gaping maws. I cut and glued some teeth in as well as a greedy tongue from red leather, molded plastic shrubbery into a tiny pot and this is the dangerous looking result - posing in Riddle's Rook for now, until it finds its eventual home:
