Paluu Potter's Peakiin - Potter's Peak revisited

Kun mun nukkekotihullaantumiseni alkoi, keksin innoissani  pykätä Pottereille oman linnan, jossa vanha liinavaatekaappi muodosti linnan kolme ekaa kerrosta ja siihen päälle kyhäsin vanerisen jatko-osan. No, tuolla se tönöttää neitseellisessä asussaan yhä edelleen... Mikä itseasiassa taitaa olla hyvä asia!

When my dollhouse obsession was sparked I decided I wanted to make the Potters a castle of their own. The first three floors are an old linen cabinet and on top of that I built the upper floors out of sturdy plywood. Well, the "castle" is still in its birthday suit so to speak... which actually turns out to be a good thing!

Kaverini Katriina toi mulle autolastillisen vankkoja putkia torneja varten ja siitä se ajatus sitten lähti... päätin nyt, että rakennan yläkerrokset uudelleen näitä putkia käyttäen! Tai yritän ainakin ;) Itseasiassa aion pitää tuon kaapin päällä olevan ekan kerroksen ja rakennan siitä ylöspäin putkia käyttäen.

My friend Katriina brought me a carful of these sturdy tubes to use for towers and I've now decided to rebuild the upper floors using these! Or at least I'll try to ;) Actually I'll keep the first floor I built on top of the cabinet and then use the tubes to build up from there.

Putket ovat todella vankkoja, niden seinämät on sentin paksuiset! Niitä on kolmea kokoa - kapein on sisähalkasijaltaan 10 cm, keskimmäinen 16 cm ja levein 30 cm.

The tubes are really sturdy, the walls are 1 cm thick! There are three sizes - the narrowest is 10 cm across on the inside, the middle on is 16 cm and the widest is 30 cm.

Tää vaatii huolellista suunnittelua. Mun täytyy keksiä miten näitä on järkevintä työstää ja pinnottaa ja sahata jne.... Ensinnäkin haluan tietenkin tehdä ulkopinnoista kivilinnan näköisiä, kysymys kuuluu miten, rakennelmasta kun tulee valtava. Ihan vaan kivipaperi ois tietysti helpoin, mutta toisaalta haluisin siihen semmosta rosoisempaa pintaa. Kananmunakennot ois yks tie eivätkä ne lisäis painoa entisestään raskaisiin putkiin, mutta johan siinä menisi tonni rasioita ja ikuisuus niitä laittaessa.

Pohdin, josko päällystäisin putket pikasilotteella tai vastaavalla ja muotoilisin kivet siihen, mutta kysymys kuuluu tarttuisko se miten hyvin tohon pintaan. Ideaali olisi, jos pinta ois sekä kivimäinen että kestävä.  Aion rakentaa tornit osissa, jotta voin nostaa osan pois työstettäväksi ja takasin ja siksi pinnan täytyis kestää käsittelyä jonkun verran. Jos pinta olis puuta, sekottaisin varmaan jonkunlaista laasti/silote-vesi-puuliima-seosta, mutta mites nyt? Entä maalaisinko ulkopinnatkin pohjamaalilla ennen kuin lätkäsisin silotteen, vai pistänkö siloteseoksen suoraan putken raakapinnalle? Ideoita vastaanotetaan kiitollisuudella!

This requires careful planning. I need to decide how best to work with this kind of material, how best to saw and decorate it etc.... First of all I want the facade to be of stonework, the question s how to do it as the structure will be huge. Using stone imitation paper would be easiest, but I'd like the stonework to be more textured than that. Egg carton stones would be one option that wouldn't add a lot of weight to the already heavy tubes, but that would require a ton of cartons and an eternity of work.

I think a light coating of some kind of filler or plaster or whatever might be the best option, then I could slap it on and form the stonework out of that. But how well will it adhere to the surface of the tubes? Ideally I want the stonework to be as realistic as possible but also as durable as possible. I will build the towers in sections that can be lifted on and off, one section at a time for ease of work but that means the stonework has to be able to take some handling. If the surface was wood I'd most likely mix filler with water and wood glue, but what to use now? Also, do you think i should paint the outer walls with primer before starting to put up the stonework or should I slap the filler directly on the tube's untreated surface? Ideas are extremely welcome!

Isoisäni nimesi paikan aikoinaan tonttia ympäröivien upeiden ja ikivanhojen mäntyjen mukaan. Our magical community has a name now - Bowtruckle Pines. This because my 1:1 home is called Mäntymäki, which is Finnish for Pine Hill, thus named by my grandfather due to the very large, old and beautiful pines on and around the property. I've always thought of them as elders of the tribe watching over us and since the wizards arrived I've learned that they are the rare kind of pines that are wand quality and thus home to bowtruckles:

Bowtruckle Pinesissa on vahva taikuuden keskittymä, jonka ansiosta pienen yhteisön sisällä on erilaisia aikavyöhykkeitä - on Dumbledore ja Kalkaros Harryn kouluajoilta, aikuisen Harryn ja kumppaneiden perheet ja Voldemort voimainsa tunnossa. Olen kuullut huhuja, että kylän muodostaa pieni keskusta, josta löytyy mm. paikallinen pubi The Troll & Trollop, pöllöpostitoimisto, kirjakauppa Scribble & Quills, Weasley's Wizard Wheezesin paikallisedustus, apteekki Felicis Brews ja osto- ja myyntiliike Niffler's Nest. Bowtruckle Pines is located in a powerfully magical area that even has different time zones and thus can incorporate Dumbledore and Snape from Harry's school days, the adult Harry & co's families and Voldemort in his heyday. I've been told that the village has a small center with a few businesses such as the local pub, The Troll & Trollop, an owl post office, the book store Scribble & Quills, a local branch of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, the apothecary Felicis Brews, a little shop that buys and sells all sorts of exciting stuff called the Niffler's Nest, etc. Beyond the village center lie woods and green, rolling hills for miles and miles, dotted with lone houses here and there. The vast countryside even serves as a sort of nature reserve for all kinds of magical creatures.

Downsia tuhoamassa - Demolishing the Downs

Oon yrittänyt purkaa Dobby Downsia, tän enempää en onnistunut. Onko kellään vinkkiä miten nuo tapetinjämät saisi pois? Edellinen omistaja on siis tapetoinut seinät ja lattiat, lieneekö käyttänyt kontaktiliimaa kun eivät millään meinaa irota. I've been trying to take Dobby Downs apart, this is all I managed. Does anyone have ideas as to how I might be able to remove the remnants of wallpapering? The previous owner had wallpapered the walls and floors using some kind of really strong glue and they won't come off. I think they've used the same glue on the house because these bits don't come apart. Ideas?

Hedwig House suunnitteilla - Planning Hedwig House

Olen tässä katsellut ja mittaillut noita kirpparilta löytämiäni nukkekotiosia ja mietin josko niistä tosiaan pykäisi Hedwig House-nimisen talon (Ginevra Cottage sai alkuperäisen nimensä takaisin, se sopii sille paremmin). Jotenkin se tuntuu turhan fiiniltä Griseldalle, mutta saakon täti sen. Ainahan hää voi muuttaa jos joskus tulevaisuudessa löytyy joku hälle sopivampi :)

I've been measuring the dollhouse parts I found at the fleamarket and I think I will build a house, named Hedwig House (Ginevra Cottage got it's original name back, it suits it better), around them. It seems a bit fancy for Griselda, but she'll get it. She can always move if she finds something more appropriate one day :)

Nuo kaksi ovellista etupaneelia on varmasti eri taloista, mutta tuumasin että siitä voisi tulla kiva näin - tuo toinen ovi vois olla keittiön oma sisäänkäynti :)

The two front panels that have doors are probably from separate houses, but I figure it might look nice like this, with the side door as a kitchen entrance :)

Uusi Dobby Downs - A new Dobby Downs

Tässä uusi Dobby Downs, joka sekin tosiaan löytyi vitosella ja olikin lopulta ilmainen - pakkohan se oli ottaa, varsinkin kun itselläni oli muksuna samantyylinen Lundby ja olin kerennyt haaveilla, että olisi hauskaa tehdä sellasesta jokin vähän epä-Lundbymainen projekti.

Here's the new Dobby Downs, it too cost 5 euros and ended up free of charge - so I had to have it, particularly since I've had a similar Lundby as a kid and had been thinking that it'd be fun to turn a Lundby into a little bit of an un-Lundbyish project.

Edellinen omistaja oli myös tehnyt uuden katon, ilmeisesti laminaatista. Ensin ajattelin ottavani sen pois, mutta kaavailen tuohon olkikattoa (tekoturkiksesta kenties), joten ehkä se voi jäädä siihen alle korkeutta antamaan. Kahtellaan.

The former owner had also fitted a new roof on, from floring I think. At first I thought I'd take it off, but I'm planning a thatched roof (perhaps out of faux fur), so maybe I'll leave it to give the thatching some height. We'll see.

Aloitin jo tapettien poiston, paikoin alkuperäiset pinnat kurkkivat esiin. Tästä tulee useamman kotintontun yhteinen koti. Visioin rappusten alle komeron, jossa asuu talon vanhin kotitonttu, joka ei perusta moderneista hömpötyksistä vaan asuu vaatimattomasti rappusten alla, koska sitä hirvittää sellainen luksus kuin oma talo tontuille. Ja kuten vanhus narisevalla äänellä sanoo "jos porraskomero kelpasi nuorelle Harry Potterille, kelpaa se totta vie vanhalle kotitontullekin". Lisäten julkeudestaan kauhistuneena: "ei niin että minä vertaisin itseäni suureen Harry Potteriin!!"

I've started to remove the wallpaper, the original surfaces are showing through here and there. This will be the home of several house elves. I have a vision of a cupboard under the stairs, where the eldest house elf lives, as he doesn't hold with the new fangled ideas of elven rights, let alone something as extravagant as a whole house for house elves. As he says in his quivering voice, "if a cupboard under the stairs was good enough for a young Harry Potter, it's certainly good enough for an old house elf". Adding, shocked by his own audacity: "not that I'm compairing myself to the great Harry Potter!!!"

The kitchen door is missing but that's just as well, I think it's better without it.

Griselda ikkunaostoksilla & minä ja muut Kätkijät - Griselda window shopping & me and other Borrowers

Griselda se jaksaa vihjailla, miten rankkaa on kodittomalla vanhuksella ja kuinka kylmä onkaan talvi kun ei ole kattoa pään päällä ja vanhan luita kolottaa eikä ole paikkaa mihin luutaansa nojata. Tarkasti ottaen Griselda kyllä on vallannut tyhjillään remonttia odottavan Marvolo Manorin, mutta toki ymmärrän, että omaa tekisi mieli. Tädillä vaan on kovin suuret odotukset. Eilen oli pakko päästää akka koneelle talokuvia katselemaan. Ajatukseni oli etsiä sieltä ideoita mökkiin, jonka rakennan itse, mutta eikö tuo heti iskeny silmänsä Greenleafin Orchid-nimiseen mökkiin. Ja onhan se hirmuisen sievä!

Griselda is tirelessly harping on about how tough it is to be elderly and homeless, how her poor old bones ache when she has no roof overhead and nowhere to lay her broom. Strictly speaking she's not at the mercy of the elements, as she's squatting in the still empty and unrenovated Marvolo Manor. But I see her point, she does need something more permanent. The trouble is, she's got grand expectations. Yesterday I had to let her go online to look at houses, with the idea (at least on my part) of looking for ideas for a cottage I could build her myself. Griselda however fell for Greenleaf's Orchid. And sure enough, it is adorable!

Mutta kuten Griseldalle sanoin, ei mulla ole varaa mihinkään lähemmäs 70 euron arvoiseen huusholliin! Griselda ei vaikuttanut vakuuttuneelta... Lopulta jouduin ilmottamaan aika tiukin sanakääntein, että täti on hyvä ja tyytyy johonkin mun vaatimattomaan tekeleeseen! Jos mä joskus rikastun (joopa joo...), voidaan asiasta neuvotella uudemman kerran. Tulos on, että siinä missä sen papatukselta ei eilen saanut rauhaa, on tämä päivä ollut suorastaan jäätävän hiljainen. Griselda on mököttänyt merkitsevästi Marvolo Manorin ikkunassa aamusta iltaan - ei pihahdustakaan, mutta sen katse porautuu ytimiin. Luulisi ton ikäisen täti-ihmisen tietävän, että elämä on. Ja taatusti en kerro sille, että mäkin haaveilen, että ehkä jonakin päivänä... se ei vaan kertakaikkiaan ole kovin realistinen haave. Huoh.

But as I told Griselda, a 70 euro cottage just isn't within our means! She was not convinced... Finally I had to tell her in no uncertain terms that she better just get used to the idea that I will make her a far more modest cottage myself! If I get rich one day (as if...), we can revisit the issue. The result is, that whereas you couldn't shut her up yesterday, today her silence has been downright chilling. Griselda has spent the entire day in the window of Marvolo Manor, pointedly silent, but I can feel her disapproving glare boring into me. You'd think that at her age, she'd have learned that you can't always get what you want. And I will never let on that I too hope that perhaps, one day... it's just not a very realistic dream. Sigh.

Olen mä kylläkin ostanu kaks uutta nukekotia... kyllä, luitte oikein... Mutku nähkääs halvalla sai! Olivat 5 euroa kipale ja loppupelissä myyjä antoikin ne ihan ilmaseks! Oi onnea! Toinen taloista on metrin korkuinen ja sen annan äidille synttärilahjaksi. Mähän olin jo tehnyt kaavat Muumitaloa varten (äiti on sellaisesta haaveillut), mutta loppupelissä teenkin Muumitalon tosta aihiosta. Pyöreähän se ei ole, mutta muuten täydellinen :)

I have bought two other dollhouses though... yes, you heard me... But I had to! They only cost 5 euros each and then the seller decided to just give them to me for free! Oh joy! One of the houses is 1 meter in height and I will give that to mom. She's been dreaming of a Moomin House and I'd already made cardboard templates for it, but this will actually make a fine Moomin House. It's not round of course, but otherwise a great start :)

Toinen uusi hankintani on  reissussa rähjääntynyt Lundby, josta puolestaan tulee uusi Dobby Downs. Ehkä pykään siitä toisesta Griseldalle mökin, saas kattoo. Itselläni oli aikoinaan samanmallinen Lundby (aikaisempaa vuosikertaa kylläkin, se kun oli 70-lukua), joka harmi kyllä on hävinnyt vuosien saatossa.

My other new acquisition is an old and rather battered Lundby, which I'll probably make into a new Dobby Downs. Maybe I'll turn the one I first got for that purpose into a cottage for Griselda. We'll see. Anyway, I had a Lundby like this as a kid (although an earlier model, since this was in the '70s), that unfortunately has been lost to the ages.

Lapsuusmuistoista puheenollen, muistatteko Mary Nortonin kirjat Kätkijöistä? Luin ne ihastuneena ties kuinka monta kertaa. Niistä tehtiin sittemmin ensin brittisarja (jonka ekan tuotantoauden löysin dvd:na pari vuotta sitten) ja sitten leffa. Jos ette, niin tässä muistinvirkistystä:

Kätkijät kiehtoivat mua muksuna suunnattomasti ja mä tykkäsinkin hiipparoida ympäri kämppää katselemassa pieniä esineitä kätkijän näkökulmasta, vieden ne sitten nukkekotiini, jonne pykäsin kätkijöiden pesän. Mielikuvitusta kutkutti nähdä esineet uudesta näkökulmasta ja sijottaa ne uuteen rooliin. Pitkälti tein siis samaa, mitä nykyään teen kirppareilla :)

Speaking of childhood memories, do you remember Mary Norton's books about The Borrowers?  I loved them and read them over and over again. Later they were made into a British TV show (I found the first season on dvd a couple of years ago) and later still into a movie. If you don't remember them, here's a refresher:

I was fascinated by the Borrowers and I enjoyed walking around the house looking at small objects through Borrower eyes and taking them to my dollhouse, where I built a sort of Borrower's den. I really enjoyed the imaginitive exercise of looking at objects from a new perspective and then giving them a new function. Much the same as what I do at fleamarkets these days :)

Takaraivossa onkin kolkutellut ajatus tehdä myös kätkijä-aiheinen nukkisprojekti. Siihen ei kyllä käy nukkekoti ja toissapäivänä tuli mieleen, että voisiko sen tehdä seinäkelloon. Tuumasta toimeen, kaivoin kätköistäni aiemmin saamani käkikellon, mutta kyllä se on liian pieni sellaseen. Ehkä jos joskus löytyisi joku vähän isompi vanhan ajan seinäkello joka ei enää toimi, sellaseen voisi kätkijänpesän kyhätä :) Juu juu, tiedetään, kun nyt joku jo keskeneräsistä projekteista edistyisi :D Mutta hitto soikoon, kyllä tuokin on vielä toteutettava!

I've long been thinking that it would be fun to do a Borrower project. That means something other than an actual dollhouse and with that in mind I dug out a cuckoo clock that I'd been given a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it's too small for what I have in mind, but should I at some point happen upon a larger clock that doesn't work anymore, that could make a neat den :) Yeah yeah, I know, I have tons of projects already :D But darn it, I have to do a Borrower's den at some point as well!

Aarteita, haaveita ja selityksiä - Treasures, dreams and excuses

Aivan ensimmäiseksi tahdon esitellä uuden ystäväni, noita-akka Griseldan! Tapasin Griseldan äidin luona muuttohommissa ollessani ja kun täti kuuli, että mun luonani on orastava taikayhteisö, päätti hän raahata kapsäkkinsä - mukaanlukien tuon kauniin pitsin - Pottereiden kulmille. Griselda on vanhaa kansaa, joka haikeudella muistelee männä vuosikymmenten velhokyliä ja ilahtui suunnattomasti kuullessaan, että täkäläisistä metsistäkin löytyy sellainen. Tosin hää rupesi heti supattelemaan tarvitsevansa oman mökin...

First of all let me introduce my new friend, the witch Griselda! I met her at mom's place and when Griselda heard that there is a burgeoning magical community at my place, she promptly decided to pack her bags - including this beautiful lace - and move to the Potter's neighborhood. She wistfully remembers the vibrant all-magical communities of yesteryear and was thrilled to learn there is a local village just like them in these woods. She is now hinting heavily that she will be needing a cottage of her own...

Luoja kuitenkin yksin tietää milloin Griselda mökkinsä saa - koko velhoyhteisöni odottelee malttamatomana että multa liikenisi aikaa remontoida heidän kotejaan. Lienevät kyllästyneitä kuulemaan erinäisiä ideoitani ja esittelemiäni materiaaleja, kun kaikki tuntuu jäävän haaveiden ja suunnitelmien tasolle. Voldemort uhkailee jo kirouksilla, jollen kohta ala pohjamaalaamaan Marvolo Manoria ja vaatimaton herra kun on, hää on tilannu julkisivuun mustaa marmoria (en oo uskaltanut kertoa, että peikot lakkoilevat louhoksella). Riddle's Rookin tulisijakin on rakentamatta... Hermione pohtii jo viitsisikö pyytää kotitonttuja tapetointihommiin jos en ryhdy tositoimiin ja Ginny muistaa huomautella kuivakkaasti, että Potter's Peakin makkarin piirrustukset ovat olleet valmiina jo  yli vuoden... Tallikin on alkutekijöissään ja Ginevra Cottageen en uskalla vilkaistakaan, ettei Molly tule silmille. Kotitontut sentään vakuuttelevat, että remppaamaton mökkikin on hyvänen aika sentään aivan liikaa!

Lord only knows when Griselda will get her cottage though - the entire wizarding community is on pins and needles, waiting for me to find the time to fix up their new residences. I think they're pretty tired of my lofty ideas and enthusiastic displays of materials, when everything seems to just be pie in the sky dreams and plans. Voldemort is threatening horrific curses unless I start priming Marvolo Manor and being his immodest self has already ordered black marble for the facade (I haven't had the nerve to tell him that the trolls are striking at the quarry). The fireplace of Riddle's Rook hasn't been built yet either... Hermione is debating whether to ask house elves for help if I don't start wallpapering soon and Ginny keeps dryly pointing out that I've had the plans for the Potter's Peak master bedroom ready for over a year... The stables are unfinished and I don't dare even glance at Ginevra Cottage, lest Molly pounce on me. The house elves at least assure me, that even an unrefurbished cottage is much too grand for them!

Syystä nuo mutisevat, itsekin haluaisin toteuttaa visioitamme, mutta aika on kortilla. Jelpin äitiä, paahdan käännöstöitä ja koirat, mukaan lukien vielä kotona asustavat 11-viikkoiset pupeloiset Lablab ja Labua, tarvitsevat minua <3 Mukavaa mutta kiireistä, eikä siinä välissä jaksa eväänsä liikauttaa. Lupaan kuitenkin pyhästi niin taikayhteisölle kuin lukijoille, että jahka surimmat 1:1 työt on hoidettu, edistyvät velhojenkin asumukset!

They have good reason to grumble and I long to realize our visions, but time is scarce. I help mom, work furiously on translations and the dogs, including the 11 week old pups Lablab and Labua who are still here, need me <3 It's nice but keeps me very busy and in between I'm absolutely exhausted. I do promise both the wizarding community and my readers, that once the biggest 1:1 tasks have been completed, I will get back to the wizard dwellings!

Keksin että haluaisin ainakin Marvolo Manorin ja Potter's Peakin fasaadeihin gargoileja. Tuo ruskea mulla on ollut vuosia, mietin josko esim. Mold Makerilla vois tehdä siitä jotain versioita. Noita lohikäärmeitä mulla on kaksi ja oon suunnitellut niistä takkaa Voldemortille, mutta ois ne aika komeet myös Marvolo Manorin ulkopuolella. Mahtaako kukaan tietää mistä tota Sculpeyn Mold Makeria saisi ja mistä voisi löytää pieniä gargoileja/lohikäärmeitä, joko pelkkiä päitä tai kokonaisia otuksia?

I realized that I want to add gargoyles at least to the facades of Marvolo Manor and Potter's Peak. I've had the brown one for years and I figure maybe I could make my own versions of it using Mold Maker. I have two dragons but I'd like to make them into a fireplace for Voldy, although they would be pretty imposing outside the Manor too. Does anyone know where I might er and gargoyles/dragons, either just heads or the whole creatures?

Syysmasis ja remppahaaveita - SAD and dreaming of renovations

Syysmasennusta pukkaa eikä mistään meinaa tulla mitään. Näpertelyinspistä olis, muttei energiaa toteuttaa sitä. Mieluiten vaan nukkuis, eilen sentään sain siivottua 1:1 ja huomenna jatkan pentulan pykäilyä, sillä meille on pitkästä aikaa tulossa salukipentuja <3 Sen viimeistään luulisi piristävän!

Oon tässä tillittänyt Marvolo Manoria ja luulenpa, että haluaisin tehdä julkisivun mustasta marmorista, jossa on kultaiset suonet (maalaten toteutettuna tietenkin). Ikkunan- ja ovenpuitteet sun muut vois sit tehdä kulahtaneen kultaisiksi, ehkä mustalla krakleerattuna. Simmonen tosi synkkä mutta pröystäilevä kokonaisuus siis, tuntuis Voldemortin tyyliltä. Täytyisi vaan jossain vaiheessa olla varaa ostaa kunnon pöntöllinen mustaa maalia ja toinen kultaista, about alla olevan sävyistä. Luoja vaan tietää millon siihen on varaa. Kauhea hinku olis myös piristävälle kirpparikierrokselle, mutta eipä ole varaa siihenkään *synkkää mutinaa*

I'm suffering from a bout of SAD and not getting anything done. Now and then inspiration for crafts strikes, but I can't seem to actually work up the energy to put those ideas into practice. Mostly I'd just like to hibernate, yesterday I did finally get around to some 1:1 house cleaning and tomorrow I'll continue getting the whelping room ready, as we are finally expecting Saluki puppies again <3 That should at least get me out of this funk!

I've been staring at Marvolo Manor and concluded that I think I'd like to make the facade out of faux black marble with golden veins (done in paint of course). Window sills, doorways etc. could be painted in the same aged gold, perhaps with black crackling. A dark and sinister yet ostentatious facade seems like Voldemort's style. So, now I need a big tub of black paint and another with gold paint, approximately the shade seen below. God only knows when I'll have enough money for the paint though. I am SO longing for a tour of the fleamarkets too, it'd do my mood a world of good, but I can't afford that either *dark muttering*

Minimielipuoli tosiaan - Minimaniac indeed!

Voinee turvallisin mielin väittää harrastuksen vieneen mukanaan, kun huomaa TAAS ostaneensa nukkekodin! En voinut vastustaa, kun hieman leikeissä kuluneen mutta remontoitavissa olevan ihanuuden sai 6 eurolla!

I think it's safe to say that I've been swept away by this hobby, seeing as I've gotten yet ANOTHER dollhouse! I couldn't resist it, when I found this fixer upper for a mere 6 euros!

Muutama kauneusvirhe löytyy, mutta äkkiäkös nuo korjaa! Tai ainakin kuvittelen niin - en ole vielä saanut uutta ihmettä karvaisiin käsiini, mutta ihana kummityttöni ja miehekkeensä kävi hakemassa sen myyjältä tänään ja joko tällä tai ensi viikolla saan sen kotiin - en malta odottaa! It's taken a few knocks, but they should be easy to mend! At least I think so - I've yet to get my paws on it, but my wonderful goddaughter and her man picked it up from the seller today and I should get it home this or next week - can't wait! Ikiliikkumaton? - Perpetual non-motion?

Mä monesti kateellisena selailen muiden blogeja ja ihmettelen muiden harrastajien tehokkuutta - mä olen aivan toivoton. Ideoita ja visioita on paljon ja pyörittelen niitä päässäni loputtomiin ennen kuin saan kerätyksiä rohkeutta itse tekemiseen. Suorituspaineita selvästikin - pelkään, ettei siitä tule ollenkaan sitä, mitä olin ajatellut, vaikei sillä pitäisi olla minkään valtakunnan merkitystä! Ainahan voi yrittää uudelleen ja mitä enemmän tekee, sitä enemmän oletettavasti oppii. Sen kun vielä sisäistäisi!

Koomista sinänsä, koska toinen harrastukseni on koirankasvatus ja nukkistelu toimii ikäänkuin terapiana ja kasvatuksen vastapainona: koirankasvatuksessa pelataan elävillä olennoilla ja virheen tekeminen voi johtaa monenlaiseen suruun kaikille osapuolille. Niinpä aina sanonkin, että nukkistelu on siitä kivaa, että kun tekee virheen, siitä ei kärsi kukaan. Sen kun tekee uudestaan. Mutta mitä ilmeisimmin mä olen vaan armoitettu neurootiko, kun nukkisjuttujakin pyörittelen, pohdin ja kyseenalaistan joka välissä :D

Ja entäs sitten, kun vihdon ryhdyn ajatustyöstä konkreettiseen askarteluun! Tänään on ollut sadepäivä ja mä oon viettänyt koko päivän askarrellen Voldemortille katosvuodetta ja takkaa. Ainakin teoriassa :D Levittänyt kaikki mahdollisesti tarvittavat materiaalit, työkalut ja liimat ympärilleni, sovittanut, mittaillut pyöritellyt ja pohtinut ja mikä on päivän saldo? Se, että oon mahdollisesti onnistunut päättämään mitä materiaaleja sänkyyn käytän ja ehkä myös sen, mistä kehyksistä teen takanreunuksen :D Eikä ku, oon mä muuten näiden tuntien aikana saanut aikaan yhden konkreettisen asian: liimasin kulmalistat sängynpohjaan :D

 Älkää ymmärtäkö väärin, kuvitteelliset lukijani, mulla on ollu oikeen rattosaa - mutta tosiaankin tuntien askarteluhetkestä ei ole jäänyt käteen kuin se sängynpohja ja materiaalivalinnat :D Eihän Roomaakaan toki päivässä rakennettu, mutta oletettavasti vähän sukkelammin sentään ;)

 I often enviously read the blogs of other dollhouse fans and marvel at their efficiency - I'm absolutely hopeless. I have lots of ideas and I turn them over and over in my mind before working up the courage to actually do something. Clearly some kind of fear of failure - that it won't live up to my vision of it, eventhough clearly that shouldn't matter in the least! If at first you don't succeed, try try again and presumably you learn through trial and error. I need to learn to leap!

Ironic actually, because my other hobby is dog breeding and doing dollhouse crafts is therapy and a counterweight:  in dog breeding you work with living beings and if you make a mistake, it can lead to a lot of misery for all concerned. I always say that making miniatures is relaxing in that here, if you make a mistake, so what? Just try again, no one got hurt. But clearly I'm utterly neurotic, since I question, ponder and rethink everything to do with dollhouses as well :D

And then, when I finally move on to actually trying to realize my ideas! It rained today and so I spent the whole day crafting a canopy bed and fireplace for Voldemort. At least in theory :D I spent hours surrounded by materials, tools and glues, measuring and pondering and what is the result of a day's work? That I have possibly decided which materials I will use for the bed and maybe also which fire surround I'll use :D Hold on, I did actually glue four pieces of strip wood onto the bottom of the piece of wood that will become the bottom of the bed :D

Don't get me wrong, my imaginery readers, I've had a blast - but that's all I have to show for it :D Rome wasn't built in a day, it's true, but I assume they were a tad more efficient ;)

Noku halvalla sai... vähän päälle 34 egee ja uusi, paketissa vielä... Uutena käsittääkseni maksanu 80 kymppiä tarjouksessa, eihän sitä voinu edes köyhä ohittaa! Tätä ilmeisesti Honkkarin mallia:

Niiden mittasuhde on ilmeisesti about 1:14 joka heittää paikoittain? Mietin tekiskö siitä Potter-projektin jatkumon eli Ronin ja Hermionen kodin, jollei sit se mittasuhteiden heitto projektien välillä häiritse. Ei varmaan, eihän mun tarvii punkea niitä toistensa luo - tää talo varmaan vaan Potterin huimasta tornista katsottuna NÄYTTÄÄ mittasuhteiltaan pienemmältä, eiks vaan? ;D Se on ihan liian iso ja fiini kotitonttujen kodiksi <3

Heron Hall tullee talon nimeksi, tulee tietysti HERmionesta ja RONista :) Ja onhan heron englantiakin, tarkottaa jotain lintua, oisko haikara? Täytyy tsekata, jos sais senkin talon teemaan jotenkin :)

Kuulisin mielelläni kokemuksia ja ajatuksia muilta Honkkari-talojen sisustajilta ja muilta myös, eritoten siitä, miten ja missä järjestyksessä sähkötyöt, tapetoinnit ja talon kokoamiset kannattaa toteuttaa :)

Yup... it's true... yet another project to work on... :D

But c'mon, it was cheap! 34 euros and it's new, still in the package. And as I understand it it cost about 80 euros on sale once upon a blue moon. Even a pauper like me can't pass that up! It looks like this, one of the retail store Hong Kong's own models I believe:

I think the proportions are approximately 1:14 though not entirely consistently?  I think it'll be Ron and Hermione's house to tie in with my Potter-theme, although the slight variation in proportions bugs me a teensy bit. But I don't have to put them together after all - and hey, this house probably just LOOKS smaller in proportion from the lofty height of Potter's Peak, right? ;D It's way too big and swanky to house house elves <3

It'll most likely be called Heron Hall - as in HERmione and RON, of course :) Plus, it's some kind of bird, like a stork or something, I think? I have to look it up and work it into the house somehow :)

I'd love to hear from other people who have the Hong Kong store's houses and from others as well, especially as to how and in what order it's best to do the lighting, wallpapering and assembly of the house.

Mammalle Muumitalo - A Moomin House for mom

Äiti haaveilee omasta nukkisprojektista, Muumitalosta nimittäin. Kirppareilta oonkin metsästänyt sille jo muutamia asukkeja taloon ja nyt rupesin suunnittelemaan talon runkoa. Ohessa sen pahvinen ensiluonnos - huonekorkeuksia sun muita on sumplittava, mutta noin suunnilleen näin. Harjakorkeus noin metri, kerroksia 4-5 ullakko mukaanlukien, huoneita 7-8. Talon kylkeen tullee maakellari. Varsinaisestihan Muumitalo on pyöreä, mutta koska pyöreiden puuseinien teko ei multa luonnistu, tein äidin talosta kuusikulmasen.

My mom reams of a dollhouse project of her own - a Moomin house to be precise. I've bought a few inhabitants for her from the fleamarkets already and now I began designing the house. Here's the first rough cardboard model - I still have to tweak the heights of the rooms etc., but something like this. The total height is about 1 meter, there will be 4-5 floors counting the attic, and 7-8 rooms. Plus a separate earth cellar. The Moomin house is of course actually round, but since i can't manage round walls. I made the floorplan a hexagon instead.

Suunnittelutasolla olevia projekteja - Projects that are still just dreams

Kauheasti tekisi mieli tehdä lisää projekteja, mm. jonkunlainen itämainen palatsi/tila, pyramidi, merenneidon vedenalainen koti, menninkäisten pesä ja jos jostain löytyisi vanha kulahtanu Lundby, haluisin tehdä siitä jonkun tosi epä-lundbymaisen tonttukodin. Kaikkiin on varastossa jo jotain pientä matskua, paljon tarvitaan vielä. Haaveilen myös sellasesta pöytäsahasta jolla vois tehdä pikkuruisia koristeleikkauksia, lähinnä puusta.

Mä tarviin verstaan :D Että ois ihanaa kun olis työtila, johon vois jättää projektit levälleen ja piipahtaa työstämään mitä millonkin kun inspis iskee, sen sijaan että pitää käyttää puol tuntia siihen, että kaivaa esiin tarvittavat vehkeet ja kantaa ne olkkariin ja sit tunnin siivoomiseen heti kun täytyy tehdä jotain muuta - ja sit koko soppa uudelleen. Pitäsköhän askarrella itelleen verstas - siihen tosin tarvittais varmaan hiukkasen enemmän materiaalia ja taitoa kuin mitä mulla tule koskaan olemaan :D

I'm itching to try different projects, like some sort of oriental palace, a pyramid, a mermaid's underwater home, a forest dwelling for goblins and, if I could find an old, cheap Lundby house, I'd like to try to turn it into a very non-Lundby-like elf dwelling. I have a few trinkets for each project stashed away but need lots more. I also wish I could afford a table saw for tiny, delicate ornamental woodworking.

I need a workshop :D How cool would it be to have workspace where you could just leave everything out and pop in to work on one project or another whenever inspiration strikes. Instead of having to spend half an hour hauling stuff into the living room and then an hour putting it back and cleaning up whenever you have to do something else inbetween. Maybe I should make a project out of building a workshop - although I fear that'd require a lot more material and skill than I'll ever have :D

Vähän kuulumisia - This and that

Mineilyrintamalla on ollut suhteellisen hiljaista, talon etuseiniä sahailtu (ja niihin ikkunoita) ja nyt etsinnässä on joku, joka vois leikata kaakelia sopivan kokoiseksi, jotta siitä sais lattiat talliin ja kylppäriin, laatat kun on 1:1 laattoja ja 9,5 x 9.5 cm kooltaan, eikä kaikki mahdu kokonaisina noihin huoneisiin.

Kun ei printterissä ole mustetta eikä varaa ostaakaan sellasta, niin oon koko viime yön selaillut ja leikellyt lehdistä "kaakeleita" suunnitetelmissa olevaa pönttöuunia varten. Kokeilun alla on myös tiilien teko munakennomassasta.

Toinen vaiheessa oleva projekti on kirjahylly Harryn työuoneeseen - tarkoitus ois tehdä sellanen koko seinän pituinen, ainakin osittain seinään upotettu kirjahylly. Osat oon mitanut ja piirtänyt valmiiksi ohuelle vanerille, mutta tarvitsisin lehtisahan ja terävämmät jiirisakset, jotta saisin osat leikattua. Toi vaneri on liian paksua askarteluveitselle, mutta liian ohutta tavalliselle käsisahalle, joka rispaa vanerin pahasti. Nyt ei kuitenkaan oo rahaa erikoistyökaluihin varsinkin kun salukijuniori Zafir joutui leikkaukseen (pieni irtopala poistettiin olkanivelestä, toivottavasti poika paranee pian ja kokonaan!) ja siihen hulahti ihan kiitettävästi rahaa... Aattelin kuitenkin katella löytyiskö joku pienihampainen askartelu/käsisaha ja jiirilaatikko jostain huokealla - katellaan. Ois kyllä ihana päästä todenteolla huonekaluhommiin, varsinkin kun sain äidiltä ja siskolta Vivienne Boultonin Nukkekotikirjan (<3 <3 <3) ja syyhyttää kokeilla sen ohjeita.

Arpaonni suosi arvonnassa, nyt ootan innolla voittoani, Karoliinan tekemää upeaa katosvuodetta!!!! Kiitos!!! Muutakin nukkispostia on tullut, siitä lisää kuvien kera pian :)

It's been pretty quiet on the minifront, the front walls of the house are sawed, windows for them too,.Now I'm looking for someone who can help me cut the tiles (real 1:1 tiles sized 9,5 x 9,5 cm) so they fit into the stables and bathroom, as they don't all fit into them whole.

Since there is no ink in my printer and I can't afford to buy more, I spent last night going through old magazines to cut out "tiles" for a fireplace I'm planning. I'm also trying to make tiles out of a kind of porridge made from water and egg cartons.

Yet another project I'm working on is making a bookcase for Harry's study. It'll cover one entire wall and be at least partially sunk into the wall - I'll have a job filling it when it's done :D I've measured the parts and marked them out on thin plywood, but I don't have the proper tools to cut it - a regular saw just shreds the seams and the plywood is too thick to work with a knife. I was hoping to buy some tools on Wednesday, but my youngest Saluki Zfir ended up in surgery to remove a bit of loose cartilage from his shoulder joint, so there's no money for tools left. I do intend to see if I could find a really cheap saw that could cut the plywood now and save to buy more specialized equipment (but still cheap and hand held) later. We'll see. It would be great to be able to start building the furniture, particularly since my mom and my sister gave me Vivienne Boulton's dollhouse book and I'm itching to try out her instructions.

I won a competition and am eagerly awaiting my prize, a lovely canopy bed made by Karoliina!!!! Thank you!!!

I found this necklace at the flea market and will at least make dishes and jewellery boxes, perhaps also frames, from it - any other ideas?

Mulla on purkillinen tämmösiäkin - pari ideaa ois niiden nukkiskäyttöön, mut ne on vielä epämääräsiä :D Lisää ideoita vastaanotetaan :)
