Paluu Potter's Peakiin - Potter's Peak revisited

Kun mun nukkekotihullaantumiseni alkoi, keksin innoissani  pykätä Pottereille oman linnan, jossa vanha liinavaatekaappi muodosti linnan kolme ekaa kerrosta ja siihen päälle kyhäsin vanerisen jatko-osan. No, tuolla se tönöttää neitseellisessä asussaan yhä edelleen... Mikä itseasiassa taitaa olla hyvä asia!

When my dollhouse obsession was sparked I decided I wanted to make the Potters a castle of their own. The first three floors are an old linen cabinet and on top of that I built the upper floors out of sturdy plywood. Well, the "castle" is still in its birthday suit so to speak... which actually turns out to be a good thing!

Kaverini Katriina toi mulle autolastillisen vankkoja putkia torneja varten ja siitä se ajatus sitten lähti... päätin nyt, että rakennan yläkerrokset uudelleen näitä putkia käyttäen! Tai yritän ainakin ;) Itseasiassa aion pitää tuon kaapin päällä olevan ekan kerroksen ja rakennan siitä ylöspäin putkia käyttäen.

My friend Katriina brought me a carful of these sturdy tubes to use for towers and I've now decided to rebuild the upper floors using these! Or at least I'll try to ;) Actually I'll keep the first floor I built on top of the cabinet and then use the tubes to build up from there.

Putket ovat todella vankkoja, niden seinämät on sentin paksuiset! Niitä on kolmea kokoa - kapein on sisähalkasijaltaan 10 cm, keskimmäinen 16 cm ja levein 30 cm.

The tubes are really sturdy, the walls are 1 cm thick! There are three sizes - the narrowest is 10 cm across on the inside, the middle on is 16 cm and the widest is 30 cm.

Tää vaatii huolellista suunnittelua. Mun täytyy keksiä miten näitä on järkevintä työstää ja pinnottaa ja sahata jne.... Ensinnäkin haluan tietenkin tehdä ulkopinnoista kivilinnan näköisiä, kysymys kuuluu miten, rakennelmasta kun tulee valtava. Ihan vaan kivipaperi ois tietysti helpoin, mutta toisaalta haluisin siihen semmosta rosoisempaa pintaa. Kananmunakennot ois yks tie eivätkä ne lisäis painoa entisestään raskaisiin putkiin, mutta johan siinä menisi tonni rasioita ja ikuisuus niitä laittaessa.

Pohdin, josko päällystäisin putket pikasilotteella tai vastaavalla ja muotoilisin kivet siihen, mutta kysymys kuuluu tarttuisko se miten hyvin tohon pintaan. Ideaali olisi, jos pinta ois sekä kivimäinen että kestävä.  Aion rakentaa tornit osissa, jotta voin nostaa osan pois työstettäväksi ja takasin ja siksi pinnan täytyis kestää käsittelyä jonkun verran. Jos pinta olis puuta, sekottaisin varmaan jonkunlaista laasti/silote-vesi-puuliima-seosta, mutta mites nyt? Entä maalaisinko ulkopinnatkin pohjamaalilla ennen kuin lätkäsisin silotteen, vai pistänkö siloteseoksen suoraan putken raakapinnalle? Ideoita vastaanotetaan kiitollisuudella!

This requires careful planning. I need to decide how best to work with this kind of material, how best to saw and decorate it etc.... First of all I want the facade to be of stonework, the question s how to do it as the structure will be huge. Using stone imitation paper would be easiest, but I'd like the stonework to be more textured than that. Egg carton stones would be one option that wouldn't add a lot of weight to the already heavy tubes, but that would require a ton of cartons and an eternity of work.

I think a light coating of some kind of filler or plaster or whatever might be the best option, then I could slap it on and form the stonework out of that. But how well will it adhere to the surface of the tubes? Ideally I want the stonework to be as realistic as possible but also as durable as possible. I will build the towers in sections that can be lifted on and off, one section at a time for ease of work but that means the stonework has to be able to take some handling. If the surface was wood I'd most likely mix filler with water and wood glue, but what to use now? Also, do you think i should paint the outer walls with primer before starting to put up the stonework or should I slap the filler directly on the tube's untreated surface? Ideas are extremely welcome!

Tein tommosen raakaversiopiirrustuksen siitä, mitä haluaisin tehdä - siniset viivat edustavat seinää, jonka viereen linna on nousemassa - tuo alaspäin tuleva sininen viiva on verholippa, josta joudun saahaamaan palan pois jos tämä ottaa onnistuakseen :D

Here's a rough first draft of what I'm planning. The inky lines represent the wall the castle will stand next to - the shorter ink line coming down a ways is one of those curtain boards - I'll have to saw a piece out of it to fit in the castle if this works :D

Vuorokausirytminikin on nyt ihan sekasin :D Mun oli ihan pakko tehdä ne tornitkin valmiiksi ja jotenkin siinä hujahti koko yö :D Nyt talon runko on siis valmis, enää puuttuu ikkunareiät ja -lasit ja sit etuseinä pitämään pölyn poissa. Harjakorkeus 235 cm :D Sisko tossa kysy nauraen multa miks mun täytyy aina tehä kaikki potenssiin 10 :D Mä ihailin tossa valmista rakennusta ja nauroin ääneen itelleni :D Hullun hommaa :D

Wow did I stay up too late :D I just had to finish the towers while I was at it and somehow it took all night :D Now the entire frame of the house is ready, I just need to make windows and put the glass in and fix the facade to keep the dust out. The whole shebang is 235 cm high :D My sister laughed and asked why I always have to give everything 110% :D I started laughing aloud at myself when I stood back to look at the finished structure :D Crazy :D

Armas siskoni Sara ja miehensä Timo olivat tänään rakennushommissa ja sen ansiosta Pottereiden talo - jonka juuri nimesin Potter's Peakiksi - saatiin kokoon! Vaikuttava pytinki, 86 cm leveä ja 205 cm korkea (siitä 20 cm on kaapin jalkoja) ;D Korkeutta tullee noin 35 cm lisää, sillä haluaisin vielä tehdä siihen kaksi tornia ullakon päälle :D Mutta tässä ylimmät kolme kerrosta, tohon valkoisten huoneiden yhteyteen tulee terassi:

My beloved sister Sara and her man Timo were here today to help me put together the dollhouse and thanks o them the Potter house - which I just dubbed Potter's Peak - is now standing! Impressive proportions, it's 86 cm wide and 205 cm high (20 cm of that are the legs of the cabinet) ;D It'll be about 35 cm taller when it's finished, as I'd still like to put two towers on top of it :D But here are the top three floors, next to the white rooms is the terrace:

Ja tässä koko talo - kolme alinta kerrosta vaan on nukkismatskujen vallassa, oottelen vielä lipastoa johon voisin ne tunkea. Niihin kerroksiin on kaapinovet suojaamaan niitä pölyltä, noihin muihin on vielä väkerrettävä etuseinät sitä varten. Lisäks täytyy leikata tohon ruskeaan vaneriin muutamat ikkunat ja tietysti maalata talo ulkoa - kolme ylintä kerrosta, kaappi-osa saa olla sellanen kuin on.

And here is the whole house - the first three floors are stuffed full with material for the project, still waiting on the chest of drawers I've been promised to put that stuff in. Those floors have the cabinet doors to protect them from dust, the others I have to build a removable facade for to do that. I also have to cut some windows into the brown walls and of course paint the top floors on the outside.

Siitä tuli tosiaan vähän, öhöm, kookas, harjakorkeus 205 cm ja jahka tornit valmistuu niin about 240 cm  :D Sit tulee katto vastaan eikä voi kasvattaa talon korkeutta enempää  :D

Torneihin muuttanee minilohikäärmeitä ja lepakoita.

Voldemortin torni pystytettiin myös, siihen tosin tulee vielä vinokattoinen ullakko jahka keksin miten - tai sitten jonkunlainen tähystyspaikka katolle. Torni löysi paikkansa isoisän tekemän kaapin päältä - vanhin salukini Farha heijastuu kuvassa vinkeesti valokuvien taakse kaapin peiliin <3

It is a bit, ummm, tall, 205 cm and the towers will make it almost 240 cm :D After that it's practically scraping the ceiling so I can't make it any taller, which is no doubt good :D


The towers will most likely house bats and mini dragons.

We also put together Voldemort's tower, it'll either get an attic or ramparts. The tower found its place atop the cabinet my grandpa made for me when I was a little girl - my eldest Saluki Farha ended up reflected in the mirror behind the picture frames, which is kinda cool <3

Aloittelevan ministin (ja blogistin) päiväkirja - A dollhouse newbie (new at blogging too)

Oon kauan ihaillut nukkekoteja etenkin Lemmikkipalstojen PP:n kautta. Tänä kesänä, kun mulla oli serkkuni lapset kylässä, kaivoin niille mommoni vanhan nukkekodin ränsistyneen saunan perukoilta. Vähintään 90 vuoden ikäinen nukkis, jolla leikkii nyt jo sukumme 4. sukupolvi, oli vähän kärsinyt hiirenpapanoista ja kosteudesta ja suureksi surukseni IHANAT alkuperäset tapetit oli repeytyneet ja homehtuneet.

I've long admired other people's doll house projects, but always figured I wouldn't have the skill or the patience for it. This summer my cousin's kids were staying with me again and to give them something to do, I dug out my grandma's old dollhouse consisting of two rooms. It's at least 90 years old and these kids are the 4th generation to play with it. Having spent some years in cold, damp storage, it was not in the best shape - here it is as we found it, mouse droppings & all. To my great sorrow the gorgeous original wallpaper had been torn and was a bit moldy and so could not be salvaged.

Tässä vaiheessa ajatus oli vaan että saadaan muksuille jotain tekemistä, joten me pläjäytettiin siihen ekat kirppikselä vastaankävelleet tapetit ja lattiaksi muovimattoa joka oli jäänyt yli 1:1 rempasta. Lattia sentään laitettiin irtonaisena, kun en raaskinut vanhaan nukkikseen liimata muovimattoa.

At this stage the thought was just to give the kids a project and we just slapped on some reasonably nice wallpaper we found at the flea market and made the floor out of rubber flooring left over from the renovation of my 1:1 house. I didn't have the heart to glue it to the floor of an antique dollhouse, so I glued it to a thin sheet of wood and just placed it on top of the old floor so it could be easily removed.

Mutta niinhän siinä kävi, että nälkä kasvaa syödessä ja löysin itseni unelmoimasta enemmän huolella laitetusta sisustuksesta - ja useammista huoneista! Apu oli onneksi lähellä - vanha liinavaatekaappi, jossa kaksi ovea ja väliseinät muodostaa hyvin 1:12 skaalaan sopivat 6 huonetta. Mommon vanha nukkis muodostaa lisäkerroksen ja jotenkin siinä nyt kävi niin, kun kerran oli vaneriakin omasta takaa, että sahasin osat VIELÄ kahteen kerrokseen, joista toinen on ullakko. Kunhan saan ne koottua, tulee nukkiksen kokonaiskorkeudeksi vaatimattomat 205 cm *maanista hihitystä* Mut hei, 20 cm siitä on kaapin jalkoja ;D

Doing all this though, I got hooked and found myself thinking about a more thought-out interior - and more rooms! Luckily I had the solution handy - an old linen cabinet with two doors and shelves that easily lent itself to a 1:12 scale dollhouse with three floors and six rooms. Grandma's old dollhouse makes an additional floor and somehow I ended up sawing the parts for two more, one of the the attic. Once I assemble them, the dollhouse will be a mere 205 cm high *maniacal laughter* But hey - 20 cm of it are the legs of the cabinet ;D

Kaapin huoneiden sivuseinissä on hauskat syvennykset, joita myös aion hyödyntää. Ovat kuin erkkereitä tms.

The rooms inside the cabinet have side walls with these cool niches, that I plan to use to my advantage.

Että näin megalomaanisiin mittoihin tää mun pikkupikku rojektini nyt on kasvanut :D Ja sahasinpa vielä tuossa samassa osat torniin, johon tulee kaksi huonetta päällekkäin - siitä tulee jokin Voldemortin piilo. Ovat siis eri aikakautta, sillä iso nukkis sijoittuu 7. Harry Potter-kirjan epilogin tienoille, ts. siinä asuu Harry ja vaimonsa Ginny sekä lapset James, Albus ja Lily - ties vaikka keksisin niille vielä neljännenkin tenavan, vauvakalusteita olisi kiva tehdä myös. Vielä kun löytyisi aikaa itse askartelulle....

So these are the megalomanical proportions my teensy-weensy project has grown to :D While I was at it, I sawed the parts for a tower consisting of two rooms on top of each other - that'll be Voldemort's lair while he was in hiding. Yes, I'm a huge Potter fan ;) The house and the tower will be set at different times of the Potter saga, as the main house is set around the epilogue of book 7 and will be the house of the adult Harry Potter, his wife Ginny and their kids James, Albus and Lily - I might give them a 4th kid though, just because it'd be fun to make some baby stuff too. Now to find time to devote to developing it all...
